I hope you are not new to torrents. But many people are still semi-illiterate about torrents. So let me explain some basic concepts of torrents. Torrents are a method of transferring files from 'PC to PC' , people call it 'Peer to Peer'. By the use of torrents, no files are saved on any server i.e. the files are not saved on the Internet. Whenever you are downloading something from torrents, you are actually copying the files from some other PC which has already downloaded the file. In this way, a file is shared between users via a torrent.

Before starting the tutorial, there are some important things you should be familiar to.

First of all, downloading copyrighted material from torrents is illegal and you can get into real trouble if you are found distributing copyrighted material through pirate bay or other torrents. Then why am I writing this tutorial on using torrents? Because torrent is not just about copyrighted material. People do use torrents to distribute legal stuff on the internet or to share files between friends. And I hope you are not going to use this tutorial while downloading any copyrighted or illegal stuff.

Two important terms used in torrent language are:

Seeds: They are people who have the complete file.
Peers: They are people who have incomplete file or a segment of it.

So if a torrent description says it has 100 seeds and 200 peers, it means there are 100 users with complete file and 200 with a part of it. And as you know that downloading from torrents is actually downloading from other users, the number of seeds and peers is very important. If a torrent has 0 seeds, then it means that no-one has the complete file and this directly means that you won't be able to download the file completely.

OK. So after reading all this, you are ready to follow the tutorial to download from torrents.

Tutorial: Downloading Files From Torrents

A torrent client
A search engine like Google to find your required torrent.
A .torrent file or magnet link

1. Torrent Client

The most important requirement for downloading a torrent is a torrent client. It is a software that lets you download from torrent descriptions (Torrents are different than regular downloadable files, remember?). If you are not able to understand what is a torrent description, then don't worry. Just read ahead.

So the first requirement is to get a torrent client. The top three according to me are:

All of them are free and easy to use. Any of the torrent clients that you download and install in your PC acts like a download manager.

2. Find Your Torrent

Now you need to find the torrent you want to download. Most of you would have already got a .torrent file from Pirate bay that you are interested in downloading. You can also get torrents from ISOhunt and other sites.

Here is how:

Search your required file on Google like 'xyz torrent'.
Find the most appropriate site.
If an option to download .torrent file is available, then download it. If not, and an option to download via magnet link is available then scroll this tutorial down to '4. Downloading from magnet links'.

3. Downloading From .torrent File

So you must have so far downloaded the .torrent file that you need. The size of the .torrent file should be very less, just about 50 KB only. But don't worry, even if you have downloaded the .torrent file of a movie worth 4 GB, it would have the same small size.

That is because the .torrent file you have downloaded is just a description of the real torrent you want to download.

Now, open the .torrent file using the torrent client you installed. The client should ask for a folder where you want to download your files. Just set your preferences and the download should start just similar to any ordinary download.

Congrats! Now you are successfully downloading a torrent file. The time required to complete the download depends on your torrents size. So just wait while your files are being downloaded.

4. Downloading From magnet links

If there is no option to download .torrent file from the site and the only option is to download through magnet links, then:

Simple! Just click on the magnet link and your torrent client should show a dialog box with an option to start your download. The basic difference between downloading from .torrent files and from magnet links is that, when downloading from magnet links, the download starts automatically without the need of any description file. That is because the magnet link itself fetches the required description. But some people say that magnet links are slower than using .torrent files.

Tips To Follow While Downloading From Torrents

Always download only legal stuff.
Always check the number of seeds and peers before downloading the torrent.
Read the comments page of torrent site to check if the torrent is good or a fake one.

Everyone knows how important the torrent network is. And when there are restrictions in the network like proxy servers, url filtering and port blocking, we have to use some unconventional means to make things work.

Here I have shown a method which will surely make the torrent work via Tor, as long as you are able to surf web. But beware that here it says that torrent over tor is not a good idea from security point of view. So use it at your own risk. But I think as long as you are not concerned about your anonymity and you have good security config in your machine, you are good to go.

Tor uses the principle: “As long as there is some traffic allowed, all traffic can be passed.” It means as long as even simple web browsing is allowed you can tunnel other types of traffic through this web browsing service.

You would need:

Tor. Either installed version or portable version. If you are new to tor, I suggest portable version.
Privoxy. This creates a HTTP/HTTPS proxy server on your local machine.
A torrent client. I use uTorrent.
And a list of http torrent trackers. You can use this list and paste it directly in torrent client.

Step 1: Setting up Tor.

There are a lot of tutorials on how to configure Tor. If you have tor installed and working, it will already allow you to visit websites which are otherwise blocked. In portable version there is a firefox derivative Tor Browser through which you can visit websites anonymously without any censorship. You can read more about Tor here.

Configure your connection settings in tor according to your network:

View your proxy config in your default browser and use it here. If your proxy server uses authentication, make sure you insert username and password. Get new bridges from here. You should check tor logs regularly to see if your bridges work. If they don’t then replace them with new bridges. Preferably use ones with port 443, if your are using proxy server to connect to internet.

Now start Tor. Tor opens a SOCKS5 proxy on a port in your machine. If you are using portable version, that port is at 127.0.0.1:9150. Else it is at 9050.

We can use this port directly in torrent but it gives a lot of warnings and erros in tor logs.

Check if you can browse through Tor before you move to next step. Use https://check.torproject.org to check if you are really connected through Tor.

Step 2: Setting up Privoxy.

After installing privoxy edit the file config.txt know as “Main configuration” which in the install directory.

Find the following lines and uncomment them(Remove the ‘#’ from the start of line). If any of these lines are not present then add them at the end of config file.

listen-address 127.0.0.1:8118
listen-address localhost:8118
forward-socks5t / 127.0.0.1:9150 .

The dot at the end of last line is important. Again the port number is 9050 if you dont use portable version of tor. Read the help in the config file if more tweaks are to be made.

Now start privoxy after saving this file. You will have an HTTP proxy on your localhost.

You can check if privoxy works by using HTTP proxy server 127.0.0.1:8118 in your browser and see if it can connect to internet. Again use https://check.torproject.org to check if you are really passing through Tor.

Step 3: Setting up Torrent client

Now its time to configure proxy settings in torrent client.

Now add some torrent file to download and add the HTTP trackers mentioned previously as UDP trackers dont work over a proxy server. Note every 2 trackers should be separated by 1 blank line.

Now your torrent would have started downloading 🙂
